Pistol Safety and Marksmanship Skills Building

This course teaches basic marksmanship fundamentals** and firearm safety using asimulated pistol with a resetting trigger and laser to indicate where the shots hit. Norange, live handgun, or ammunition is needed with this training course. It can be heldanywhere: a meeting room in a hotel, a business boardroom, or a church hall. ThePistol Safety and Marksmanship Skills Building course helps develop skills in the areasof safety, sight alignment, trigger control, grip, and breath control. This course is for thebeginner up to the experienced shooter, providing the foundational skills and knowledgeto become a safer and more proficient marksman. After the course, a participationcertificate is awarded. Students may attend this course to decide whether or not theywould like to follow up by taking the full-length Basic Pistol course with live fire or simplylearning to improve their safety and fundamental marksmanship skills. (**No live fire)

Youth / Adult Pistol Safety and Marksmanship Skills Building

This course is designed for Youth and Adults who will be attending together. Basic Handgun Cleaning

Do you have a desire to learn how to clean your pistol or revolver? Have you purchaseda new handgun and want to learn how to break it down and reassemble it? If so, thisclass is for you! You need to bring your unloaded pistol or revolver, a notebook, and apen. NO AMMUNITION!During the instructional period, basic safety, selection of appropriate cleaning products,along with detailed instructions of how to safely and properly field strip, clean, andreassemble your handgun, to include basic function checks. Students will receiveappropriate cleaning supplies for their handguns to take home with them.Please do not bring any Ruger Standard, Mark I, Mark II, Mark III, or Mark IV pistols.Limit two (2) handguns per person. Depending on the number of students, time may notallow for cleaning both handguns during the instruction period.

First Steps Pistol (NRA)

FIRST Steps Pistol is designed for BEGINNERS to provide a hands-on introduction tothe safe handling and proper orientation to your specific pistol action type. This courseis 3-4 hours long and includes classroom and range time. Students will learn the rulesfor safe gun handling, the particular pistol model parts, operation; ammunition selection;shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol and continued opportunities for skilldevelopment. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA GunSafety Rules brochure, NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, FIRST Steps Coursecompletion certificate.

Length: 3 to 4 hours

Equipment Required: Handgun, Two hundred (200) rounds of ammunition, Hearing Protection (muffs or puffs), Eye Protection, Hat with a forward-facing bill

Basics of Pistol Shooting (NRA)

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course introduces students to the knowledge, skills,and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely. This course will teach aboutpistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, pistol shooting fundamentals, andpistol shooting activities. The Basic Pistol Course will also help prepare the student forparticipation in other NRA courses. This course includes standardized NRA training fornovice shooters. The course provides an excellent opportunity to prepare forresponsible gun ownership, handling, and usage. Class size is limited to ensure hands-on, personal instruction. The course is objective-driven and includes both classroomand range time. Students will receive the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Guide and acourse completion certificate.
Prerequisite: This course is for adult individuals who have not been disqualified frompossessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state, or local laws. Prospectiveparticipants can demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producingan NRA First Steps Pistol certificate or demonstrating basic safety skills to one of thestaff at Horse Shoe Firearms.

North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit Course

The North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit (Often stated as 'Concealed Carry Permit' or 'CWP') is a permit that allows the recipient to carry a handgun concealed in the state of North Carolina in addition to states that are reciprocal for carry and recognize a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit. In addition to the ability to conceal a handgun with this permit, the permit acts as a reusable North Carolina pistol purchase permit for purposes of purchasing a handgun, rifle or shotgun at a Federal Firearms Licensee dealer. The Pistol Purchase Permit or North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit is required for purchase of a handgun in the state of North Carolina, but for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun, an FBI NICS check can be performed instead at the FFL dealer.
To obtain a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit, you must first meet the following eligibility requirements according to the North Carolina Department of Justice Standards:
  1. Be 21 or older (Requirement to apply for the permit - but can take the NC CHP course at the age of 20)
  2. A US citizen
  3. Be a resident of North Carolina for at least 30 days before filing your application;
  4. Provide a certificate of completion of an approved safety course.

The above mentioned NCDOJ safety course is taught here at Horse Shoe Firearms, LLC. The course consists of a state mandated 8-hours of classroom instruction, followed by a written test and a live-fire range qualification to obtain your Concealed Handgun Permit Certificate. The course cost is $115. This fee includes the range fee and the use of a .22 Long Rifle handgun during qualification but does not include ammunition, which can be purchased from the instructor at the range qualification. Students are also welcome to bring their own handgun and ammunition if they prefer to the range qualification.To apply for your concealed carry permit after attending the required course, please visit the following County Sheriff's office links to submit your application:

Basic Personal Protection in the Home (NRA)

This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe andefficient use of a handgun to protect oneself and family and provides information on thelaw-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.Students should expect to shoot an approximate minimum of 100 rounds of ammunition.Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills; strategies for home safety andresponding to a violent confrontation; firearms and the law, choosing a handgun for self-defense; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive theNRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA GunSafety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, andcourse completion certificate.
Note: Lesson III of this course—Firearms and the Law, and Legal Aspects of Self-Defense—is instructed by a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) who possesses anAdvanced Law Enforcement certification granted within the state and is a North CarolinaCriminal Justice Education and Training Standards Certified, Instructor.Prerequisite: This course is for law-abiding adult individuals, as defined by applicablefederal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery ofthe basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, and cleaning the firearm).Prospective participants can demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudesby producing an NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate.

Personal Protection Outside The Home (NRA) Level I

This course teaches students the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for avoidingdangerous confrontations and the safe, effective, and responsible use of a concealedpistol for self-defense outside the home.Description: The course is divided into two levels. Level one is nine hours and offersthe essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered to carry, store, and use afirearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home. Students spendseveral hours on the range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition duringlevel one. Time and ammunition requirements are minimum and may be exceeded.Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics Of Personal Protection Outside TheHome handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, and appropriate (level one) coursecompletion certificates(s).Note: Lesson III of this course—Firearms and the Law, and Legal Aspects of Self-Defense—is conducted by a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) who possesses anAdvanced Law Enforcement certificate granted within the state and is a North CarolinaCriminal Justice Education and Training Standards Certified, Instructor.Prerequisite: This course is for law-abiding adult individuals, as defined by applicablefederal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters, and are of good repute andpossess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics Of Personal Protection InThe Home Course. Prospectiveparticipants can demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producingan NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course Certificate.

Personal Protection Outside The Home (NRA) Level II

Personal Protection Outside the Home Level II is an additional five to sixhours on the range and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition learning advancedshooting skills. This training incorporates skill-based drills and live fire from variouspositions and locations to include kneeling, crouching, standing, seated, high and lowbarricade, moving forward and rearward; time and ammunition requirements areminimum and may be exceeded. All training in this course takes place on an outdoorfiring range. This course does not consist of classroom instruction.NOTE: Wear appropriate clothing for the outdoor range conditions.Prerequisite: This course is for adult individuals who are not disqualified frompossessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law and are ofgood repute and possess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics OfPersonal Protection In The Home Course. Participants must also understand the basiclegal concepts relating to the use of firearms in self-defense and must know andobserve general gun safety rules and those safety principles specific to defensivesituations. Prospective participants can demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skills, andattitudes by producing an NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home CourseCertificate and NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside The Home Level I CourseCertificate.

Length: 5 to 6 hours

Defensive Pistol Course (NRA)

The NRA Defensive Pistol Course will focus on the techniques needed to develop adefensive mindset. The goal of the course will be to develop the knowledge, skills, andattitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and withconfidence. As a result of participating in this course, the student will be able to explainand demonstrate the following: how to apply the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handlingwhen carrying a concealed firearm; basic principles of concealment; the differencebetween cover and concealment; drawing from the holster; levels of mental awareness;developing the proper mindset when using a pistol for personal protection; clearingcommon stoppages; use of pocket pistols; and more. Students will receive the NRAGuide to the Basics Of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, the NRA GunSafety Rules brochure, and the NRA Defensive Pistol certificate. This course is onlyconducted by NRA-certified Advanced Pistol Instructors.

Length: 7 to 8 hours
